AT&T Moves Email to the Cloud
In a bold move for a former infrastructure provider, AT&T (NYSE: ATT) is allying with McAfee (NYSE: MFE) to provide a new cloud-based secure email gateway.
The new gateway will check inbound email messages before hitting enterprise hardware, as well as filtering/reporting on outbound email. AT&T advocates the new service will be easier to manage via the BusinessDirect(SM) portal, and provide enterprise-level features to medium-sized organizations for the first time. The new service will also filter spam, malicious attachments, and connections between client machines and botnet servers, in addition to reporting and archiving.
“With this new AT&T Secure E-mail Gateway Service, our customers can ensure the integrity of a message before it even enters their network. In addition, the solution helps to meet compliance regulations as unwanted content is blocked and sensitive content can be encrypted with this service,” said Bill O’Hern, assistant vice president of technology security for AT&T Business Solutions, in a statement.
Security threats continue to rise for organizations of all sizes largely due to spam. In a recent threat report by McAfee Labs, there were 135.5 billion spam messages sent per day in 2009 – most originating from China.
